Volunteer

Landslides are a common natural phenomenon in Rangamati hill district of Bangladesh. The Rangamati Pourashava is surrounded by many hills and lakes. For these reasons, it is very hard to reach in many communities of the Pourashava. Now the situation is more difficult due to continuous heavy rainfall in the area. Many homes situated at unsafe locations also expose them to the risk of landslide due to heavy rainfall. The local administration has marked some temporary shelters in the municipality areas. The Urban Community Volunteers (UCVs) have been responding very well to support, aware, evacuation and relief distribution activities in the landslide risk areas of the municipality. UCVs response along with local FSCD, administration and municipal authorities and involved in evacuation and relief distribution programs in different shelter in the landslide prone areas of the city. Local administration has taken support from UCVs to evacuate the local people in the shelter and relief distribution activities. Approximately 30 volunteers where 19 male and 11 female trained volunteers are continuing support to the local administration.

The UCVs observed the rainfall situation from local level to national level. They also organized several awareness programs and give time to time update of weather forecasting by sharing news and information through micking and using online platforms e.g., facebook groups, pages and messenger groups. Total 480 volunteers from selected three wards of Rangamati Pourashava have got the search and rescue training from Bangladesh Fire Service and Civil Defense (FSCD) by the support of National Resilience Programme (NRP). Beside emergency response due to landslide risk these trained volunteers have worked in different social activities to make aware the people about earthquake and other natural and man-made disaster. Volunteers also participated in different national and international day for crowd management in Rangamati Pourashava.
